Two U-M Aerospace Engineering faculty elected 2022 AIAA Associate Fellows
Professors Veera Sundararaghavan and Mirko Gamba were elected to the grade of Associate Fellow-Class of 2022.
Professors Veera Sundararaghavan and Mirko Gamba have been elected to the grade of Associate Fellow-Class of 2022 in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). The grade of Associate Fellow recognizes individuals who have accomplished or been in charge of important engineering or scientific work, or who have done original work of outstanding merit, or who have otherwise made outstanding contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics.
Sundararaghavan was recognized for contributions to atomistic scale methods and computations that advance the design, manufacturing and applications of light-weight aerospace materials and structures.
His research explores multi-length scale computational techniques for modelling and design of aerospace materials with a focus on microstructural mechanics (crystal plasticity, homogenization) and molecular simulation. He is particularly interested in new computational techniques that can revolutionize the way we compute in materials science: machine learning and quantum computing algorithms. His other research interests include integrated computational materials engineering (ICME), crystal plasticity, microstructures, atomistic simulations, materials informatics and quantum computing.
Gamba was recognized for contributions to the science and technology of rotating detonation engines, as well as other compressible high-speed flows.
His research focuses on fundamental studies in a diverse range of advanced and sustainable application concepts for propulsion and energy conversion systems, with particular emphasis on high-speed flight applications. He is also active in the development and application of novel diagnostic techniques for investigating the fundamental processes controlling these systems.
AIAA will formally honor and induct the Class of 2022 at its AIAA Associate Fellows Induction Ceremony January 3, 2022, during its 2022 AIAA SciTech Forum.
